Why this matters

Adults with disabilities are self-employed at a higher rate than the general population — self-employment offers control over schedule, environment, and accommodation. But benefits interaction is complex. Missteps can cost SSI, SSDI, or Medicaid. State policy that connects prospective entrepreneurs to SBA disability lending, Work Incentive Planning and Assistance (WIPA), and ABLE-account planning removes barriers.
